    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Substitute SCHOOL NURSE

    Position Title: School Nurse (Substitute)

    Qualifications:

    1. Must be a Registered, Professional Nurse, licensed in West Virginia

    2. Must hold or be eligible for West Virginia School Nurse certification

    3. Must hold or be willing to complete requirement for substitute nurse with the WVDE

    4. Must have good evaluation and/or recommendations from previous

    employers/supervisors.

    5.Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with school personnel

    students, parents, and the general public.

    6. Professional nursing experience required, experience working with school-age children

    preferred.

    1. Ability to compile notes and write reports

    2. Excellent oral and written communication skills

    3. Ability to successfully carry out the responsibilities of the position

    Performance Responsibilities:

    1. Provide health appraisals on children as needed or referred.

    2. Provide counseling for children regarding health concerns as needed or requested.

    3. Provide vision screening for all kindergarten students, first-time enterers and others referred by teachers, principal, or parents. Make referrals where indicated.

    4. Provide scoliosis screening to all seventh graders, if time permits.

    5. Assist in care planning at the school, helping to set up policies for care when a school nurse is not available.

    6. Provide materials for AIDS education and information upon request for students, teachers, and other personnel.

    7. Assist with immunization checks on all first-time enterers (Kindergarten and transfer in students).

    8. Serve as a resource person for all school personnel in matters of health.

    9. Provide health related in-services to faculty as requested.

    10. Provide in-services to staff relevant to health concerns of the medical/health needs of individual students.

    11. Act as a referral person, cooperating with community agencies that contribute to community health and welfare.

    12. Works closely with the Department of Special Education in providing health appraisals, counseling concerning health matters, in-services and trainings, and acts as a resource

    person where indicated. Also, assists to interpret medical reports concerning students where needed.

    13. Maintains appropriate records and documentation.

    14. Assists with pre-enrollment screening with the Special Education Department.

    15. Maintains a first-aid station at the Special Olympic Games.

    16. Provides materials on health education upon request from teachers.

    17. Provides specialized procedure training and follow up as needed or requested (medication training, catherization training, etc.)

    18. Utilizes knowledge, education, skills, and experience to plan, implement, deliver, and evaluate health programs in the school system.

    Reports To: Superintendent or Designee

    Employment Term:

    200 days during the school term established as needed by the Mingo County Board of Education

    Salary:

    Based on experience and degree level, in accordance with Mingo County Board of Education salary scale.

    Compensation
    Salary based on experience and education level per Mingo County salary schedule. Expected range: $0 - $0.
    Health and basic life insurance provided through West Virginia's Public Employees Insurance Agency. Health insurance premiums, which vary by plan and coverage level, split 80/20 between employer and employee. Basic life insurance provided at no cost to the employee.
